Activities Week 2010 took place between Monday 12th July to Friday 16th July.
During this week the normal timetable was set aside for five days and instead the school offered pupils a variety of challenges that they would not normally have a chance to experience.
Some pupils took part in one of the five residential trips arranged for this week. The trips were to Germany and Poland, Holland, Paris, Devon and Outdoor Education in
South Wales . Pupils in Year 7 were also able to opt for a one day trip to
Boulogne . The experiences the pupils will have gained from these trips are immense and will certainly remain treasured memories for a long time.
Pupils back at school could go to
Gilwell
Park and Leaside to take part in canoeing, climbing and the ‘leap of faith' to name just a few tasks on offer at the excellent Outdoor Pursuit centres. Go karting, Golf, Tennis, Orienteering and Mountain Biking in
Epping Forest were also options for pupils.
Pupils could go to the
Tower of
London and HMS Belfast or take part in Landscape Painting at
Highams
Park
Lake . On site, pupils could take part in Dynamic Groove (Street Dance), African drumming and dancing or pay a visit to the Bug Man.
Year 7 - The Puzzle Company, Dynamic Groove, The Bug Man
Year 8 - Crime and Safety Awareness Day
Year 9 - Ace Adventure,
Year 9 - Carousel of fun, (African Drumming and Dancing , Dynamic Groove and the Youth Service)
These specialist days shared a common goal to promote team building by providing a number of structured events encouraging pupils to work together and understand their responsibilities to themselves and others.
P.E. staff organised sessions in a variety of team sports not often experienced by pupils in the normal curriculum. Self-defence sessions were put on by experts from outside the school. The ICT department offered cartoon design and presentation.
The technology department provided pupils with the opportunity to design and construct a Bird Box, a CD/DVD rack, a jewellery box or a rocket. Food Technology offered pupils the chance to make sweets, they also led sessions in creating cards, felt jewellery and crazy chicks. Pupils could also take part in a Ready Steady Cook competition, Curry in a Hurry and Pizza Mania. Other crafts included Exploding Memory Boxes. The
Art
Department led pupils in Batik and Waxing. Salsa dancing also took place again.
Science department put on mythbusters and the Performing Arts put on a show stoppers activity culminating in a brilliant performance at the end of the week. It was our pleasure to invite pupils from neighbouring junior schools to share in our Activities and Enrichment week.
During the week very successful courses were run in Peer Mentoring and UCAS Training. Our Year 10 pupils started their Work Experience. On Friday the final day of Activities and Enrichment week all pupils embarked on the 18 km sponsored school walk around
Epping Forest to raise money for the school council's chosen charity, Great Ormond Street. The sponsored school walk, like all the activities arranged for the pupils during this week embodied one of Highams Park School's key core values, which is for staff and pupils to work happily together to achieve a common goal. This has been a tremendously successful week, the pupils and staff have thoroughly enjoyed and learned from their experiences. We all look forward to Activities and Enrichment Week 2011.
