Active Kids Cross-Curricular Project PDF Print
School News - General School News

activekids4.jpgRecently, all year 8 pupils have been involved in the Active Kids project, a cross curricular initiative organised by the Modern Foreign Languages department, with the support of the Food Technology department.

The aim of this project is to address one of the Every Child Matters outcomes - "Be Healthy" - and one of the National Curriculum aims -to "produce confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives."

All year 8 pupils received a chart with 7 daily active targets to meet during the project, as well as a Sainsbury's Active Kids magazine full of ideas to help them meet their targets. Pupils were rewarded with house points for each of the targets they met. Over three lessons, pupils took part in a series of activities to make them more aware of ways to keep fit and healthy while practising some key French grammar points and vocabulary related to healthy living and the future tense.

Pupils completed some reading and listening activities about healthy living and they wrote a healthy plan for the future. Pupils and teachers also took part in a fun 10 minute exercise session - in French, of course! In their food technology lessons pupils also discussed the "Eat well plate" (Food Standards Agency) and cooked some of the recipes included in the Sainsbury's magazine.

We are hoping to repeat this successful initiative to promote healthy living at Highams Park next year.
